All About Mitochondria

Do you still believe the mitochondria is only the "powerhouse of the cell," that a test can accurately diagnose mitochondrial dysfunction, or recommend generic mitochondrial support protocols?

If so, you are a victim of the watered-down, scientifically-flabby story our industry has been teaching you. Let's change that.

Practitioners Are Making Mistakes When It Comes To Evaluating Mitochondria Function

According to research, patients with mitochondrial disease see an average of 8.19 physicians before getting diagnosed, and even in the Functional Medicine industry, most practitioners either don't have a clue about how to assess for mitochondrial dysfunction, or aren't using accurate methods.

Mitochondria are more than just the "power house of the cell”

The term "Powerhouse of the Cell" was coined in 1957 and since then, research has proven that the mitochondria do much more than merely make energy. Thinking of the mitochondria as energy creators and simply throw mitochondrial supplements at your patients and clients is not the answer.

Mitochondrial Dysfunction Imitates Many Common Conditions

Mitochondrial dysfunction can present as hypoglycemia, hypothyroidism, migraines, cognitive defects, hypertension, depression, exercise intolerance, gastrointestinal symptoms, fatigue, and more. In fact, it may be at the root of a number of chronic conditions including insulin resistance, diabetes, PCOS, atherosclerosis, kidney disease, asthma, obesity, aging, and neurodegeneration.

Most Mitochondrial Supplements and Formulas Don’t Work

Mitochondrial supplements and protocols do exist, but maybe they shouldn't. For example, one person might have too many dysfunctional mitochondria and need to break them down, while another doesn't have enough functional mitochondria and needs more.

“I find your approach to be educational, but remain altruistic in your delivery. You force students to think about the physiologist mechanism behind everything and question the research and why we are doing things the way we are -- and that they may not always be right or there may not be one specific protocol for everything.

Course Details

Module 1
Introduction to the Mitochondria

Before we go deep into the world of the mitochondria, we need to take a historical, and current look, at theories and concepts surrounding the mitochondria.  What they are, where they come from, and what science has said about them throughout history.

Module 2
Basic Biochemical Processes of the Mitochondria

In this module, we will take a detailed look at the citric acid cycle and beta-oxidation, to help us prepare for the next module of the electron transport chain.  Learn how we make and use ATP.

Module 3
The Electron Transport Chain

We dedicated an entire module to the electron transport chain because of how much there is to know about it and frankly, because it is so cool.  When people talk about the electron transport chain, you'll know exactly (and probably more) what they are talking about.

Module 4
A Critical Look At Antioxidants

It turns out the scientific and nutritional world has been very wrong when it comes to free radical and antioxidants.  Here we explore the latest scientific information about these controversial topics.

Module 5
Additional Functions of the Mitochondria

In recent years the mitochondria have been found to do much more than simply be the "powerhouse of the cell".  Here we explore many of the "new" functions of the mitochondria, including in cell signalling, cell death, and the immune system.

Module 6
Mitochondrial Dysfunction

This important module covers all the potential causes of mitochondrial dysfunction which, if not properly understood and identified, will make "fixing" the mitochondria very difficult.  Multiple potential causes will be discussed.

Module 7
Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Disease

Mitochondrial dysfunction is said to be associated with over 200 chronic conditions.  In this module, we discuss some of the mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction in a handful of the more common chronic conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes, neurodegeneration, and more.

Module 8
Mitochondrial Assessments

In one of the more important modules, we take a critical look into the scientific literature at the state of mitochondrial assessments, including what is helpful and accurate, and which are not.

Module 9
Mitochondrial Interventions

Supporting optimally healthy mitochondria goes well beyond simply supplementing with "mitochondrial nutrients".  The scientific literature is full of numerous potential mitochondrial interventions including diet, exercise, uncoupling, mitophagy, and more.

Module 10
Review

In this final module, we review and cover all the major topics covered in this extensive course, including how to utilize this information and put it all together.

We Make it Easy for You to Show Off Your New Skills.

When you complete the course, you will receive an impressive Certificate of Completion that lets everyone know the time you have invested in your professional development. Hang it on your wall, put it on your website, use it in your marketing, and/or send it in to your continuing education organization to earn CEUs.*
